Eames RAR Chair (1948)

Eames RAR (Rocking Armchair Rod base)
Licensed Reproduction, circa 1950
Made by Herman Miller® & Vitra®
24.5″

Designed in 1948 by Charles & Ray Eames, Plastic Armchairs were first presented as part of the famed New York MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) international competition, “Low Cost Furniture Design”. This was a competition that was launched to encourage the design of “mass-produced furniture that is planned and executed to fit the needs of modern living, production and merchandising” . Initially the Eames Office partnered with UCLA school of engineering. The seating shell design that the Eames office actually submitted to MoMA was made from metal and they won 2nd a place prize for it.

However, Eames experimented further with materials and felt that that a fibreglass-reinforced plastic option called Zenaloy was superior and with it he felt that he had actually managed to create a compound curvature seat at a low cost which was the original brief. The fibreglass-reinforced plastic organic seat shells were later combined with various different bases that used glue & rubber shocks to mount the bases to the seat.

One of those base options was the RAR s rockers and the designs were manufactured in their millions with Herman Miller. New versions, now also licensed by Vitra, are moulded in polypropylene in a range of colours similarly to Robin Day chairs. This decision to change materials was made because it offers even greater sitting comfort and to move to a more eco-friendly material.

Bertoia Diamond Lounge (1950)

Harry Bertoia s 1950 experiment with bending metal rods into practical art produced a revered collection of seating, including the exquisite Large Diamond chair. Innovative, comfortable and strikingly handsome, the chair s delicate appearance belies its strength and durability. In Bertoia s own words, “If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes through them.”

Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) was born in Italy and while visiting his brother in America, chose to stay and enrolled at Cass Technical High School where he studied art and design and learned to make handmade jewellery. In 1937 he received a scholarship to Cranbrook Academy of Art where he met Charles and Ray Eames for the first time. In 1950, after working with Eames for a number of years he moved to Pennsylvania, to establish a studio, and to work with Hans and Florence Knoll. (Florence was also a Cranbrook Academy of Art graduate). He designed five wire pieces that became known as the Bertoia Collection for Knoll.

They were also produced with varying degrees of upholstery over the steel wire grid-work as shown below.

Eames Lounge Chair

The Eames Lounge Chair and ottoman, officially titled Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671), were released in 1956 after years of development by designers Charles and Ray Eames for the Herman Miller furniture company. It was the first chair the Eames designed for a high-end market. These furnishings are made of molded plywood and leather. Examples of these furnishings are part of the permanent collection of New York s Museum of Modern Art.

In addition to the style, the Eames Lounge Chair is very comfortable, a combination not always found in high design. The chair has become iconic with Modern style design although when it was first made Ray Eames remarked in a letter to Charles that the chair looked “comfortable and un-designy”.

Both the chair and ottoman are hand-assembled with great attention paid to the details. Shells are 7-ply veneers. Cushions are individually upholstered and replaceable; back cushions are interchangeable. The back braces and bases—of both the chair and ottoman—are die-cast aluminum. The chair base has a built-in swivel mechanism. Shock mounts are resilient natural rubber. Stainless steel glides are adjustable.  The new MCL Leather provides much of the softness and “sink-into-it-iveness” of the original, along with durability and color-fastness. The oiled finishes, while requiring periodic maintenance, produce the rich, lustrous look of the original veneers.
